Description
In this interview, Nancy Kelleher, the former associate director and managing editor for Suffolk University’s Office of Public Affairs, discusses different aspects of her education, early career, family life, and her career at Suffolk University. Kelleher outlines her career trajectory, starting in newspapers, then to freelance writing and editing, and her eventual move to a full-time role in public affairs at Suffolk. She describes the role of a university public affairs office and how the work has evolved over time with the introduction of the internet and the 24-hour news cycle.
She also highlights the joy of connecting with faculty and students whether on assignment for the alumni magazine, teaching a first-year writing class, facilitating trips with students, or creating exhibits for the Adams Gallery. In terms of work challenges, she talks about a few of the university’s most difficult public relations episodes. Throughout the interview, she talks about the importance of family life and finding time to support her children’s sports and school activities. The interview concludes with her decision to retire, as well as a reflection on the highlights of her personal and professional life.
